HBCU Hall of Famer Dannton Jackson Named Head Coach of Benedict College Men’s Basketball
Columbia, SC – Benedict College has announced the hiring of Dannton Jackson as the new head coach of the men’s basketball program, a move expected to elevate the Tigers’ basketball legacy and invigorate their competitive standing in NCAA Division II. Jackson, an HBCU Hall of Famer with more than 25 years of coaching experience, arrives with a proven track record of success at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, bringing a wealth of leadership and player development expertise to Benedict.
Jackson’s coaching career is marked by significant achievements, including transforming Xavier University of Louisiana’s men’s basketball team into a powerhouse during his tenure there. At Xavier, he became the program’s all-time winningest coach, earning national recognition and developing players who excelled on and off the court. Most recently, he served as head coach and deputy athletic director at Talladega College, guiding the Tornados to a 54-33 record over three seasons, highlighted by victories over NCAA Division I teams and multiple strong campaigns including a 22-7 season start with nine NCAA Division II wins. His leadership earned him the Hoop Dirt NAIA National Coach of the Week award, underscoring his impact at the collegiate level.
Benedict College President Dr. Roslyn C. Artis and Athletics Director Willie Washington expressed strong confidence in Jackson’s ability to advance the program. Washington emphasized Jackson’s rich history of success and commitment to both athletic excellence and academic achievement, stating that Jackson “possesses the experience, talent and determination to advance our basketball team to the next level.” This leadership philosophy aligns well with Benedict’s broader mission to develop well-rounded student-athletes who are prepared for success beyond sports.
Jackson’s stated coaching philosophy centers on discipline, toughness, and teamwork. Known for leading some of the nation’s top defensive teams at his previous stops, he plans to instill a culture of tenacity and unselfish play in Benedict’s program. “Our culture is basically we’re going to be the toughest, most disciplined, most unselfish team,” Jackson said during his official introduction. His approach also emphasizes holistic development, focusing on athletes’ academic performance and community impact alongside their on-court success.
Historically, Benedict College has been a respected name within the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), known for its rich tradition in HBCU athletics. The basketball program has experienced ups and downs over recent seasons and looks to Jackson’s arrival as a turning point. His extensive experience in HBCU basketball, combined with his national connections and recruiting acumen, positions Benedict well to strengthen its competitiveness within the SIAC and across Division II.
Looking ahead, the Benedict Tigers under Jackson will aim to build momentum quickly. Key returning players and new recruits will benefit from his mentorship, and fans can expect a team that plays with intensity and cohesion. Upcoming SIAC seasons will be critical as the program seeks to regain prominence and challenge perennial conference leaders. Jackson’s ability to navigate the evolving college sports landscape — including NIL opportunities, transfer portal dynamics, and increased media exposure for HBCUs — will be pivotal in elevating Benedict’s profile.
The appointment of Dannton Jackson is more than just a coaching hire; it symbolizes the ongoing resurgence and commitment within HBCU athletics to reclaim their rightful place in college sports. Benedict College’s decision to bring in an HBCU Hall of Fame coach reflects a broader movement to invest in talent, culture, and legacy, ensuring that Black college sports continue to foster excellence and community pride.
With Jackson at the helm, Benedict College Tigers men’s basketball is poised for an exciting new chapter defined by resilience, tradition, and ambition. The HBCU sports community will be watching closely as this storied program works to build on its historic foundation and compete at the highest levels in the years to come.
